VAT formulas
| Task | Formula (20% rate) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Add VAT | VAT = net × 0.20 | 10,000.00 × 0.20 = 2,000.00 |
| Gross amount | net × 1.20 | 10,000.00 × 1.20 = 12,000.00 |
| Remove VAT from a gross amount | VAT = gross × 20 ÷ 120 | 12,000.00 ÷ 6 = 2,000.00 |
| Net amount | gross ÷ 1.20 | 12,000.00 ÷ 1.20 = 10,000.00 |
A common mistake is taking 20% off the gross amount. 12,000 × 0.20 = 2,400, but the VAT included is only 2,000, because the percentage applies to the net price.
General formula for any rate
For a rate r: VAT on top = net × r ÷ 100; VAT included in a gross price = gross × r ÷ (100 + r). Enter your country's rate in the calculator.
Rates change and depend on the product. Check the current rate with your tax authority before invoicing.
How is VAT rounded?
To the nearest cent (or smallest currency unit). On multi-line invoices each line may be rounded separately, so totals can differ by a cent or two.
